Bridges Scholarship Recipients
Pablo Alarcon – D2 – UCLA School of Dentistry
Through my involvement with the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) at UCLA, I have been committed to serving the very communities the HDAF seeks to uplift. I have participated in mission trips to Honduras and Mexico, as well as community events in Los Angeles, providing care and education to Hispanic and underserved populations. These experiences have not only strengthened my skills but have also reinforced my passion for promoting health equity and ensuring access to care for those who need it most.
This scholarship will allow me to continue my education with greater focus, enabling me to pursue more outreach opportunities and leadership roles. I am committed to carrying forward the vision of the HDAF and to be a resource, advocate, and leader in dentistry. Thank you again for your trust and investment in my future. I promise to honor it through my actions, service, and dedication to the mission we all share.
Ariana Cabrera - D4 - Virginia Commonwealth School of Dentistry
As a bilingual fourth-year dental student at VCU School of Dentistry, I have seen firsthand how language, culture, and access barriers impact oral health outcomes for Hispanic and other underserved populations. This scholarship lightens my financial burden, allowing me to dedicate more focus and energy to advancing my skills and deepening my commitment to patient care.
My family, who has supported me every step of the way, shares in joy and gratitude for this recognition. Your generosity affirms the value of our shared mission and motivates me to push forward, knowing that others believe in my potential to make a difference.
I will continue to carry forward the vision of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation—promoting the overall health of Hispanic and underserved communities—through culturally competent care, patient education, and community outreach. I am determined to use my voice, skills, and training to bridge gaps in oral health equity and to inspire the next generation of diverse dental professionals.
Thank you sincerely for this incredible opportunity and for believing in my journey.”
Bryson Christian - D3 - University of Connecticut Dental School
One of the primary reasons that I decided on dentistry was the possibility of helping underserved communities by providing accessible high-quality care. Growing up, I always had the best experiences at the dentist! My parents ensured that I had access to the quality of care that they did not have. Their experiences inspire me to pay everything forward. I am committed to serving Black, Hispanic, and other marginalized communities.
This scholarship will help reduce the financial burden of dental school and allow me to turn more of my focus toward my education and community service. Thank you so much for this amazing recognition! I will continue to strive to make a positive difference in dentistry
Valquiria De Laurenzio - D3 - Tufts University
As a Latina dental student, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges many families face in accessing quality oral health care. This scholarship not only eases the financial burden on my family, allowing me to focus on my education and training, but also serves as a powerful reminder that my dedication to these communities is valued and supported. My family shares in this achievement, as they have been my foundation, instilling in me the importance of education, perseverance, and giving back.
I would also like to thank my Tufts Hispanic Student Dental Association chapter for supporting me in creating and participating in meaningful community engagement activities, and my faculty advisor and mentor, Dr. Forero, for her invaluable guidance. Your support has allowed me to grow as a leader, an advocate, and a provider for the communities I serve.
I am committed to advancing the HDAF’s vision to promote the overall health of the Hispanic and other underserved communities by continuing outreach, providing culturally competent care, and advocating for equitable access to oral health services. Thank you for investing in my future and in the future of the patients I will serve.
Roxana Garcia - D3 - Columbia College of Dental Medicine
This scholarship is more than financial support; it is a reminder that my voice and mission matter. I am deeply committed to serving Hispanic and underserved communities, not only by providing clinical care but also by sharing knowledge, empowering families, and inspiring the next generation of healthcare providers. In every patient who struggles to navigate the healthcare system because of language or cultural barriers, I see a reflection of my parents’ own experiences. Those moments strengthen my goal to ensure no one feels unseen or unheard.
Your generosity fuels my commitment to the vision of the HDAF: to promote the overall health of Hispanic and underserved communities. I will continue to work tirelessly to close gaps in access, build trust through compassion, and serve as an advocate for those who need it most.
Thank you for believing in me!
Gabriella Gonzalez - D3 - Woody Hunt School of Dental Medicine
Coming from Falfurrias, a small rural town in South Texas, and seeing the struggles in surrounding communities, I’ve experienced what it means to grow up with limited access to care. I moved to San Antonio for college and am now in El Paso for dental school. Three very different places, yet the same needs persist. No matter where I’ve been, one thing has remained constant: the importance of having providers who understand, advocate for, and uplift the communities they serve.
This scholarship helps ease the financial burden and reaffirms my purpose. Through mentorship and outreach, I will continue to serve as a voice for the Hispanic community, both in and outside the dental chair. I believe in creating a lasting impact by empowering others, and I will carry the HDAF’s vision forward in every step of my journey.
Thank you for believing in me. Your support doesn’t stop with me. Your contribution lights the way, and I will make sure that light continues to shine through others.
Margarita Nino - D2 - University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry
I am writing this note to express my heartfelt gratitude for being awarded the Crest Oral B Bridges Dental Student Scholarship, which supports my educational pursuits and my passion for improving the health of our Hispanic and other underserved communities.
Throughout my studies and future career, I am committed to addressing the health disparities that affect these populations. I currently engage in community outreach through our HSDA, and as President of the HSDA I plan on further expanding these programs, such as our community fluoridation clinic, to reach more and more community members. After dental school, my goal is to continue engaging with our underserved communities via similar outreach programs, as these programs can empower individuals to lead healthier lives, to ask questions, and to make informed decisions regarding their health. As a dentist, another goal of mine will be to advocate at the legislative level for equitable healthcare access; I believe this to be especially relevant now as we are seeing welfare programs (e.g. Medicaid, Medicare, CHIP) have major funding cuts.
Thank you once again for your generous support and I look forward to ensuring that the healthcare needs of our Hispanic communities and other underserved populations are not only heard but also actively addressed.
With gratitude, Margarita Nino
Ronald Zegarra - D2 - University of Detroit Mercy School of Medicine
When I learned I had been selected for this scholarship, I immediately felt a wave of gratitude—not only for the financial support, but for the belief you’ve placed in me and my future. As a first-generation college student, every step in my education has been a milestone for my family and me, and this award is a meaningful part of that journey.
This scholarship will ease the financial burden we carry, giving me the freedom to focus more on my studies and on the experiences that will shape me into the dentist I aspire to be. It means I can dedicate more time to my coursework, participate in leadership opportunities, and engage in outreach efforts that bring care and education to those who need it most.
I am especially passionate about serving Spanish-speaking and underserved communities. Too often, barriers such as cost, accessibility, and language prevent individuals from receiving quality dental care. My goal is to help break down those barriers, not only by providing treatment, but by empowering patients with the knowledge and resources to maintain their oral health long-term.
Your generosity is helping make that future possible. Thank you for your commitment to “promote the overall health of the Hispanic and other underserved communities” and for allowing me to be part of that mission. I carry this support with deep appreciation, and I look forward to the day I can pay it forward to others.
Crystal Armstrong - DH - Northampton Community College
This award confirms that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be—part of NCC’s Dental Hygiene cohort. After graduating high school in 2010, I was denied by every university I applied to and didn’t receive any financial aid. My dream of attending college was put on hold. Years later, I took a leap of faith and moved several states away to attend NCC, knowing it was the only place I wanted to study dental hygiene.
Before NCC, I briefly attended another college but had to stop due to lack of funds. Five years later, I returned to school—this time determined not to give up. Since then, I’ve been inducted into Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), elected Member at Large of the Tau Gamma Chapter, joined the Honors Program, and work as a peer tutor in the Science Resource Center. I currently hold a 3.89 GPA and am striving for a perfect 4.0.
Your support comes at a critical time. I lost funding just after being accepted into the program, and this scholarship has lifted a heavy burden. You’ve helped turn my dream into reality.
I am committed to using my education to serve underserved communities, particularly Hispanic populations that face barriers to dental care. One day, I hope to become Dr. Crystal Armstrong, DDS, RDH—the first doctor in my family—and continue the mission of improving oral health equity for all.
With gratitude, Crystal Armstrong
Jacquelin Calderon - DH - Virginia Commonwealth University
Dior Dunmire - DH - Seattle Central College
As a proud Latina and the first in my family to pursue a career in dental hygiene, I carry the dreams of my parents and grandparents who sacrificed so much to give me a better life. This scholarship represents more than an investment in my education—it is an investment in our future as a community. With these funds, I can focus more fully on my studies without the added burden of financial strain, which is a gift beyond words.
My husband and I are both committed to improving the health and well-being of the Hispanic community. We’ve seen firsthand how barriers to care disproportionately affect our families and neighbors. As a future dental hygienist, I will work to close those gaps, provide culturally sensitive care, and advocate for access to oral health services in underserved areas.
I am inspired by the HDA Foundation’s mission to uplift Hispanic communities through oral health, and I am committed to continuing that mission through both leadership and service. Thank you, P&G Bridges, for believing in me and helping make this dream a reality.”
Lauren Espinosa - DH - Texas A & M College of Dentistry
As a student at Texas A&M College of Dentistry and an active member of the Hispanic Student Dental Association, I am more motivated than ever to expand my outreach. I look forward to developing and participating in programs that promote oral health education and empower individuals to take control of their well-being. Thank you to P&G Bridges and the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation for this extraordinary honor.
Ebby Garcia - DH - Pacific University (OR)
I recently had the chance to provide care for Native Americans and farm workers, and it truly showed me the need for dental care in more rural areas, and how the lack of resources is limited for them. I am very grateful to the HDA Foundation/Bridges Crest Oral-B for the support to keep going and believing in my goals as a future dental hygienist.
Lesly Juarez - DH - University of TX San Antonio
For my family, this award represents opportunity. An opportunity for a future where I can give back to the very communities that shaped me. The support from P&G Bridges makes it possible for me to focus more on my studies and clinical training, rather than the burden of financial stress. It fuels my determination to succeed and to use my education to create a lasting, meaningful impact.
I am deeply committed to furthering the vision of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation to promote the overall health of the Hispanic and other underserved communities. I plan to do this by providing culturally sensitive care, advocating for oral health education, and using my bilingual skills to break down barriers between providers and patients- which is something my family and I have experienced firsthand. I’m glad to represent Hispanic and Latina excellence!
Thank you for investing in me and in my future patients. Your generosity inspires me to keep striving, learning, and serving with compassion and purpose.
Best,
Lesly Juarez, Future BSDH,RDH
Anthony Neciosup Galindo - DH - Plaza College (NY)
Working with and advocating for the Hispanic community has been one of the most memorable experiences of my dental hygiene journey. I recall demonstrating brushing methods to families at a local public hospital, and now, as a dental hygiene student, I can provide more intervention and see tangible results in my patients. Many of my patients at school in Queens, New York, have been Spanish-speaking, and I am fortunate to provide compassionate and high-quality care without language barriers. Working as a temp dental assistant during my schooling has opened my eyes to the disparities that exist related to language barriers, immigration status, and socioeconomic status. It is evident that the dental field needs more Spanish-speaking professionals, and I hope to see increased representation in the years to come. Dentistry is a rewarding profession, and I look forward to improving the oral and systemic health of my Hispanic community.
Thank you again to Crest Oral B Bridges and the HDA Foundation for your generosity and encouragement. I will carry your support with me every day as I begin my professional career.
Joanna Riveria - DH - University of Oklahoma HSC
Coming from a Mexican background, I've seen firsthand how language and cultural differences can create barriers in healthcare. I want to be a part of breaking those barriers, especially for Spanish-speaking patients who may feel overlooked or misunderstood. Representation matters, and I aim to contribute to the dental hygiene profession by serving as a voice for diversity and inclusion in dental care.
Being a Hispanic first-generation college student comes with a deep sense of pride and responsibility. I rely on financial aid and scholarships to continue working toward my goal of becoming a dental hygienist. Balancing work and school is not easy, but I stay focused because I know I'm building a better future for myself and my family. This scholarship has alleviated some financial stress and will remind me that my hard work and dreams are significant.
Your support fuels my determination to serve with empathy and purpose. I hope to use my education to provide compassionate, culturally aware care, especially for families who may feel unseen in the healthcare system. My goal as a dental hygienist is to be a trusted advocate, someone who not only cleans teeth, but also builds confidence, understanding, and long-term wellness within the community I serve. Thank you for believing in me and supporting my journey.

I am truly grateful to Colgate for supporting students like me. Your generosity makes it possible for us to pursue our education while staying grounded in service and advocacy. I look forward to carrying this legacy forward and working to expand access, equity, and representation in dentistry.

David Forero - D2 - University of CA at San Francisco
When I was three years old, a guerrilla war forced my family from my home country in Colombia. As we struggled to find our footing in our new world, our access to healthcare was limited. I distinctly remember the sense of security and trust my mom and I felt at a community dental clinic in Miami when the provider spoke Spanish, our native language, and treated us with kindness and respect. This experience instilled in me the profound importance of accessible healthcare and the invaluable role of providers who understand and reflect their communities—a vision at the heart of the HDAF's mission.
Over the past two years, I have worked with public health organizations in San Francisco to connect uninsured patients with free dental care. I have also become a mentor to aspiring first-generation college students and other aspiring healthcare professionals from Hispanic and Latino communities, guiding them through a journey I understand deeply. The immense joy I get from this work, while simultaneously improving my clinical skills, is an incredible feeling that confirms I am on the right path.
Victoria Parente - D4 - NOVA Southeastern University
Yanzel Vanegas - D4 - University of TX at Houston
Victor Collins-Wright - DH - Pacific University (OR)
I am committed to upholding the mission of the HDAF—“to promote the overall health of the Hispanic and other underserved communities.” My goal is to provide both preventive and therapeutic care while also empowering patients through education. I believe that knowledge is just as important as treatment, and I am passionate about helping patients understand the connection between oral health and overall well-being.
Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the barriers that many individuals in underserved communities face in accessing quality dental care. This inspired me to pursue a career where I can bridge those gaps, advocate for equitable healthcare, and create meaningful change. This scholarship reinforces my commitment to serve with compassion, cultural sensitivity, and professionalism. Again I would like to thank you for this opportunity and support throughout my dental hygiene education.
Janett Flores - DH - Palo Alto College (TX)
As a first-generation student from a Hispanic family, this scholarship has significantly helped the financial burden of continuing my education. It allows me to focus fully on my academic career without the added stress of financial strain. My family, who have sacrificed so much for my education, share in this gratitude. This scholarship represents recognition of our perseverance and commitment to achieving a better future.
This scholarship reinforces my commitment to uphold the mission of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation: to promote the overall health of Hispanic communities and serve my local community—one smile at a time. I am determined to use my education and skills to help those who face barriers to healthcare. I plan to be part of my local community outreach and advocate for greater access to dental services in underserved areas.
Thank you, Colgate and the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation, for believing in me. Your support inspires me to continue working with purpose and compassion as I strive to make a lasting impact on my community.

Delta Dental Scholarship Recipients
Sofia Banegas Anez - D2 - Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine
I was born and raised in Bolivia, where I saw firsthand the realities of growing up in a third-world country. I remember neighbors living with untreated dental pain for years, and how lack of accessibility, funds and oral education affected the community around me. These experiences planted in me a deep awareness of the disparities that exist and a lifelong determination to be part of the solution. When my family immigrated to the United States, my parents gave up their professional careers so I could have opportunities they never had. This scholarship honors their sacrifices, eases the financial burden of dental school, and allows me to focus on my studies, research, and outreach efforts.
I am committed to furthering the vision of the HDAF, to promote the overall health of the Hispanic and underserved communities. Throughout my time in dental school, I have been involved in outreach programs through HSDA, from providing oral health education at the Mexican consulate to participating in Special Olympics Special Smiles.
This scholarship empowers me to expand on these efforts. As a future dentist, I aim to integrate education, prevention, and compassionate care into my practice, and thereby creating accessible dental care initiatives that remove obstacles to treatment and help people reclaim their health and confidence. This award fuels that mission and my belief that quality dental care is a right, not a privilege.
Kassandra Canales - D3 - Southern IL University School of Dental Medicie
Pursuing this profession seemed like such a daunting task when I first started. I worried if my family would be okay as I would try to become the first doctor in my family because of the number of sacrifices they would have to make. As I have continued through school, I know that this profession is for me. Witnessing the gaps in access to affordable and effective oral healthcare firsthand through my own family’s experience has driven me to serve my community and be a voice for those who have had similar experiences. Finally starting an HSDA chapter here at Southern Illinois will provide students with a platform to promote oral healthcare within our community. I am so excited for our chapter this year and the ideas we have planned to provide equitable care and make a change.
Edilberto Castillo - D3 - University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry
I was raised by a single mother who, because of her dyslexia, was unable to work. From a young age, I understood the reality of responsibility. At sixteen, I began working to help support our family. Those experiences taught me resilience, sacrifice, and the importance of lifting others as you climb.
This scholarship eases the financial burden of my education, allowing me to focus fully on becoming the kind of dentist my community deserves. I share the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation’s vision “to promote the overall health of the Hispanic and other underserved communities” because I have lived that need. I know what it feels like to be overlooked, and I am determined to be the dentist who changes that for others.
I will use my career to serve, to advocate, and to inspire—especially Hispanic students—showing them that with dedication and perseverance, even dentistry is possible. Thank you for believing in me, my potential, and the future I am working hard to build.
Lianna Chacon - D3 - University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry
This scholarship lessens the financial burden of dental school, allowing me to focus on becoming the best clinician I can be. More importantly, it supports my commitment to the HDAF mission to promote the overall health of Hispanic and underserved communities. Having been in the dental field for over 10 years, I’ve personally spoken with patients who have gone years without the care they needed often due to language barriers, lack of insurance, or simply not having access to a provider they trust. Those conversations have stayed with me and continue to motivate me not just as a provider for the Hispanic community but as an active voice in encouraging more Hispanics to pursue careers in dentistry.
The mentorship that HDAF provides also means so much to me. I’ve always valued learning from those who are a representation of me, and I’m excited to connect with professionals who share the same heart for service. I know the guidance I receive will shape not only my future practice, but also how I show up for the communities I care about most.
Thank you, Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation, for believing in students like me. Your support is not only an investment in my education, but also in the many patients and families I will serve throughout my career.
Jennifer Contreras - D3 - University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry
Jose Luis Tapia - AS - Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine
As a Hispanic student, this award carries an even greater meaning because it represents recognition, opportunity, and belief in the potential of students like me. I sincerely hope that programs like this continue to be offered so that future Hispanic students can also benefit from the same encouragement, resources, and motivation that I have received.
Thank you for investing in my future and in the futures of so many others. Your generosity will have a lasting impact.
Jose Luis Tapia, BDS
Rodrigo Vega - D3 - University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry
I am committed to furthering HDAF’s vision "to promote the overall health of the Hispanic and other underserved communities." This scholarship allows me to continue providing care in low-income communities, where I can make a real difference by improving access to dental care and changing smiles one patient at a time. I am eager to contribute to a healthier future for these communities and help close the health disparity gap.
Kayla Mashek - DH - Prairie State College (IL)
Receiving this scholarship has also given me the opportunity to learn more about HDAF and its values. Specifically, “to promote the overall health of underserved communities.” This message truly resonates with me, as I believe everyone deserves access to quality oral healthcare, regardless of their background or circumstances. As I prepare to enter the dental hygiene profession, I am committed to carrying this value into the work I do every day.
Thank you to the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation for your generosity and your commitment to supporting future dental professionals.
Sincerely,
Kayla Mashek

Lorena Riera Cedillo - D3 - NYU College of Dentistry
The mission of the HDAF, to promote the overall health of Hispanic and other underserved communities, is deeply personal to me. Growing up, I saw how language barriers, lack of access, and limited resources affected the oral and overall health of Hispanic families. As a dental student and future dentist, I am committed to bridging these gaps through culturally competent care, patient education, and outreach programs that make dentistry more accessible.
With the support of this scholarship, I will continue to engage with the Hispanic Student Dental Association, mentor aspiring dental students, and advocate for initiatives that improve healthcare equity. I am grateful for the opportunity to join the network of leaders inspired by the HDAF’s vision, and I look forward to contributing to a healthier, more empowered community.
With sincere appreciation,
