Bridges Scholarship Recipients

Pablo Alarcon – D2 – UCLA School of Dentistry

I am deeply honored to receive this scholarship, and I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to P&G Crest Oral B Bridges and the HDA Foundation for your generosity and belief in my potential. This opportunity means so much not only to me, but also to my family. As an immigrant from Colombia, my journey has been shaped by the sacrifices my loved ones have made and the values they instilled in me. Hard work, perseverance, and a deep sense of never forgetting your community. Your support is more than financial assistance; it is an affirmation that my dreams and efforts matter.

Through my involvement with the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) at UCLA, I have been committed to serving the very communities the HDAF seeks to uplift. I have participated in mission trips to Honduras and Mexico, as well as community events in Los Angeles, providing care and education to Hispanic and underserved populations. These experiences have not only strengthened my skills but have also reinforced my passion for promoting health equity and ensuring access to care for those who need it most.

This scholarship will allow me to continue my education with greater focus, enabling me to pursue more outreach opportunities and leadership roles. I am committed to carrying forward the vision of the HDAF and to be a resource, advocate, and leader in dentistry. Thank you again for your trust and investment in my future. I promise to honor it through my actions, service, and dedication to the mission we all share.

Ariana Cabrera - D4 - Virginia Commonwealth School of Dentistry

I am deeply honored to be the recipient of the P&G Crest Oral B Bridges Scholarship through the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation. This award represents more than financial support; it is an investment in my education, my future career, and my ability to serve the communities I care about most.

As a bilingual fourth-year dental student at VCU School of Dentistry, I have seen firsthand how language, culture, and access barriers impact oral health outcomes for Hispanic and other underserved populations. This scholarship lightens my financial burden, allowing me to dedicate more focus and energy to advancing my skills and deepening my commitment to patient care.

My family, who has supported me every step of the way, shares in joy and gratitude for this recognition. Your generosity affirms the value of our shared mission and motivates me to push forward, knowing that others believe in my potential to make a difference.

I will continue to carry forward the vision of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation—promoting the overall health of Hispanic and underserved communities—through culturally competent care, patient education, and community outreach. I am determined to use my voice, skills, and training to bridge gaps in oral health equity and to inspire the next generation of diverse dental professionals.

Thank you sincerely for this incredible opportunity and for believing in my journey.”

Bryson Christian - D3 - University of Connecticut Dental School

I cannot thank P&G Crest Oral B Bridges and the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation enough for this amazing honor. This award is more than financial assistance; it is also an affirmation of the values I hold and the work I aspire to do throughout my dental career. To be recognized alongside such an inspiring cohort of students who are making meaningful contributions to their communities is truly humbling.

One of the primary reasons that I decided on dentistry was the possibility of helping underserved communities by providing accessible high-quality care. Growing up, I always had the best experiences at the dentist! My parents ensured that I had access to the quality of care that they did not have. Their experiences inspire me to pay everything forward. I am committed to serving Black, Hispanic, and other marginalized communities.

This scholarship will help reduce the financial burden of dental school and allow me to turn more of my focus toward my education and community service. Thank you so much for this amazing recognition! I will continue to strive to make a positive difference in dentistry

Valquiria De Laurenzio - D3 - Tufts University

I am deeply honored and grateful to be a recipient of the P&G Crest Oral B Bridges Scholarship through the generous support of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation and its partners. This award is more than financial assistance; it is an affirmation of my commitment to serving the Latinx and underserved communities that have shaped my personal and professional journey.

As a Latina dental student, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges many families face in accessing quality oral health care. This scholarship not only eases the financial burden on my family, allowing me to focus on my education and training, but also serves as a powerful reminder that my dedication to these communities is valued and supported. My family shares in this achievement, as they have been my foundation, instilling in me the importance of education, perseverance, and giving back.

I would also like to thank my Tufts Hispanic Student Dental Association chapter for supporting me in creating and participating in meaningful community engagement activities, and my faculty advisor and mentor, Dr. Forero, for her invaluable guidance. Your support has allowed me to grow as a leader, an advocate, and a provider for the communities I serve.

I am committed to advancing the HDAF’s vision to promote the overall health of the Hispanic and other underserved communities by continuing outreach, providing culturally competent care, and advocating for equitable access to oral health services. Thank you for investing in my future and in the future of the patients I will serve.

Roxana Garcia - D3 - Columbia College of Dental Medicine

I am profoundly grateful to P&G Crest Oral B Bridges for this life-changing opportunity. I was born and raised in Cuba, where resources were scarce and dreams often felt out of reach. When my family immigrated to the United States, my parents carried with them an unwavering hope that my sister and I could have the opportunities they never had. Every step of my journey in dentistry is built on their sacrifices and resilience.

This scholarship is more than financial support; it is a reminder that my voice and mission matter. I am deeply committed to serving Hispanic and underserved communities, not only by providing clinical care but also by sharing knowledge, empowering families, and inspiring the next generation of healthcare providers. In every patient who struggles to navigate the healthcare system because of language or cultural barriers, I see a reflection of my parents’ own experiences. Those moments strengthen my goal to ensure no one feels unseen or unheard.

Your generosity fuels my commitment to the vision of the HDAF: to promote the overall health of Hispanic and underserved communities. I will continue to work tirelessly to close gaps in access, build trust through compassion, and serve as an advocate for those who need it most.

Thank you for believing in me!

Gabriella Gonzalez - D3 - Woody Hunt School of Dental Medicine

It is truly an honor to be a recipient of the Crest Oral B Bridges Dental Student Scholarship. I am forever grateful to the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation, Crest, and Oral-B for this generous support.

Coming from Falfurrias, a small rural town in South Texas, and seeing the struggles in surrounding communities, I’ve experienced what it means to grow up with limited access to care. I moved to San Antonio for college and am now in El Paso for dental school. Three very different places, yet the same needs persist. No matter where I’ve been, one thing has remained constant: the importance of having providers who understand, advocate for, and uplift the communities they serve.

This scholarship helps ease the financial burden and reaffirms my purpose. Through mentorship and outreach, I will continue to serve as a voice for the Hispanic community, both in and outside the dental chair. I believe in creating a lasting impact by empowering others, and I will carry the HDAF’s vision forward in every step of my journey.

Thank you for believing in me. Your support doesn’t stop with me. Your contribution lights the way, and I will make sure that light continues to shine through others.

Margarita Nino - D2 - University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry

Dear Scholarship Committee at the HDA and to our P&G Bridges sponsor,

I am writing this note to express my heartfelt gratitude for being awarded the Crest Oral B Bridges Dental Student Scholarship, which supports my educational pursuits and my passion for improving the health of our Hispanic and other underserved communities.

Throughout my studies and future career, I am committed to addressing the health disparities that affect these populations. I currently engage in community outreach through our HSDA, and as President of the HSDA I plan on further expanding these programs, such as our community fluoridation clinic, to reach more and more community members. After dental school, my goal is to continue engaging with our underserved communities via similar outreach programs, as these programs can empower individuals to lead healthier lives, to ask questions, and to make informed decisions regarding their health. As a dentist, another goal of mine will be to advocate at the legislative level for equitable healthcare access; I believe this to be especially relevant now as we are seeing welfare programs (e.g. Medicaid, Medicare, CHIP) have major funding cuts.

Thank you once again for your generous support and I look forward to ensuring that the healthcare needs of our Hispanic communities and other underserved populations are not only heard but also actively addressed.

With gratitude, Margarita Nino

Ronald Zegarra - D2 - University of Detroit Mercy School of Medicine

Dear Crest OralB Bridges and HDAF,

When I learned I had been selected for this scholarship, I immediately felt a wave of gratitude—not only for the financial support, but for the belief you’ve placed in me and my future. As a first-generation college student, every step in my education has been a milestone for my family and me, and this award is a meaningful part of that journey.

This scholarship will ease the financial burden we carry, giving me the freedom to focus more on my studies and on the experiences that will shape me into the dentist I aspire to be. It means I can dedicate more time to my coursework, participate in leadership opportunities, and engage in outreach efforts that bring care and education to those who need it most.

I am especially passionate about serving Spanish-speaking and underserved communities. Too often, barriers such as cost, accessibility, and language prevent individuals from receiving quality dental care. My goal is to help break down those barriers, not only by providing treatment, but by empowering patients with the knowledge and resources to maintain their oral health long-term.

Your generosity is helping make that future possible. Thank you for your commitment to “promote the overall health of the Hispanic and other underserved communities” and for allowing me to be part of that mission. I carry this support with deep appreciation, and I look forward to the day I can pay it forward to others.

Crystal Armstrong - DH - Northampton Community College

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for your generous gift. The P&G Bridges Dental Hygiene Student Scholarship will cover half of my Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 tuition at Northampton Community College (NCC), and I’m incredibly grateful for your support.

This award confirms that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be—part of NCC’s Dental Hygiene cohort. After graduating high school in 2010, I was denied by every university I applied to and didn’t receive any financial aid. My dream of attending college was put on hold. Years later, I took a leap of faith and moved several states away to attend NCC, knowing it was the only place I wanted to study dental hygiene.

Before NCC, I briefly attended another college but had to stop due to lack of funds. Five years later, I returned to school—this time determined not to give up. Since then, I’ve been inducted into Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), elected Member at Large of the Tau Gamma Chapter, joined the Honors Program, and work as a peer tutor in the Science Resource Center. I currently hold a 3.89 GPA and am striving for a perfect 4.0.

Your support comes at a critical time. I lost funding just after being accepted into the program, and this scholarship has lifted a heavy burden. You’ve helped turn my dream into reality.

I am committed to using my education to serve underserved communities, particularly Hispanic populations that face barriers to dental care. One day, I hope to become Dr. Crystal Armstrong, DDS, RDH—the first doctor in my family—and continue the mission of improving oral health equity for all.

With gratitude, Crystal Armstrong

Jacquelin Calderon - DH - Virginia Commonwealth University

I am truly grateful to be selected as a recipient of the P & G Crest Oral B Bridges Hygiene Scholarship. This award means so much to me and my family, as it helps ease the financial challenges of pursuing my dental hygiene education. Your support allows me to focus on my studies and clinical training, knowing that there are people who believe in my potential and my goals. I share the vision of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation to promote the overall health of Hispanic and other underserved communities. Growing up, I witnessed how barriers such as cost, access, and language can keep people from receiving the care they need. These experiences have inspired me to become a dental hygienist who not only provides treatment but also educates and empowers patients to care for their oral health. With this scholarship, I am even more motivated to work hard, strengthen my skills, and be a resource for the communities that need compassionate and culturally aware care. Thank you for investing in my education and future. Your generosity inspires me to give back and serve with dedication.

Dior Dunmire - DH - Seattle Central College

I am deeply honored to be selected as a recipient of the Crest Oral B Bridges Dental Hygiene Student Scholarship. This award is not just financial support—it is a symbol of hope and encouragement for both myself and my family.

As a proud Latina and the first in my family to pursue a career in dental hygiene, I carry the dreams of my parents and grandparents who sacrificed so much to give me a better life. This scholarship represents more than an investment in my education—it is an investment in our future as a community. With these funds, I can focus more fully on my studies without the added burden of financial strain, which is a gift beyond words.

My husband and I are both committed to improving the health and well-being of the Hispanic community. We’ve seen firsthand how barriers to care disproportionately affect our families and neighbors. As a future dental hygienist, I will work to close those gaps, provide culturally sensitive care, and advocate for access to oral health services in underserved areas.

I am inspired by the HDA Foundation’s mission to uplift Hispanic communities through oral health, and I am committed to continuing that mission through both leadership and service. Thank you, P&G Bridges, for believing in me and helping make this dream a reality.”

Lauren Espinosa - DH - Texas A & M College of Dentistry

I am deeply honored to be selected as a recipient of the P&G Bridges Scholarship. To be recognized by an organization so deeply committed to uplifting the Hispanic community is both humbling and inspiring. I dreamed of becoming a dental hygienist since I was 5 years old. My family has always been my greatest supporter, even at times when things seemed out of reach. In other words, this accomplishment is not mine alone but everyone who stood by me and helped support me. From my grandparents to my parents and siblings, my family has always come together to support my passion for dental hygiene. Receiving this scholarship not only honors their sacrifices, but it also empowers me to advance my career and give back in meaningful ways. Upon graduation, I hope to use my resources to provide low-cost dental care, support scholarships for students in need, and continue advancing the mission of the HDAF.

As a student at Texas A&M College of Dentistry and an active member of the Hispanic Student Dental Association, I am more motivated than ever to expand my outreach. I look forward to developing and participating in programs that promote oral health education and empower individuals to take control of their well-being. Thank you to P&G Bridges and the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation for this extraordinary honor.

Ebby Garcia - DH - Pacific University (OR)

My name is Ebby Garcia, and I am writing this as a first-generation Mexican-American college student, which makes this an amazing honor. When I was chosen for the HDA Foundation/Bridges Crest Oral-B Scholarship, I felt extremely thankful for such an amazing opportunity. I currently attend Pacific University, where I am pursuing a bachelor's degree, and I am a full-time student, which does not allow me to work due to the workload that being in this program brings. With this scholarship, I can continue working towards my education and future as a dental hygienist. It will provide support to get my expanded practice permit in dental hygiene, which would allow me to help others in a higher capacity. My ultimate goal is to provide care for the underserved and minority groups by volunteering and working in public health in the future.

I recently had the chance to provide care for Native Americans and farm workers, and it truly showed me the need for dental care in more rural areas, and how the lack of resources is limited for them. I am very grateful to the HDA Foundation/Bridges Crest Oral-B for the support to keep going and believing in my goals as a future dental hygienist.

Lesly Juarez - DH - University of TX San Antonio

As a first-generation dental hygiene student, receiving the P&G Crest Oral B Bridges Scholarship is an incredible honor that fills me with both gratitude and determination. My parents sacrificed so much to give me the opportunity to pursue higher education, and this scholarship is not only a financial relief, but also a powerful reminder that our hard work and dedication is seen and valued.

For my family, this award represents opportunity. An opportunity for a future where I can give back to the very communities that shaped me. The support from P&G Bridges makes it possible for me to focus more on my studies and clinical training, rather than the burden of financial stress. It fuels my determination to succeed and to use my education to create a lasting, meaningful impact.

I am deeply committed to furthering the vision of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation to promote the overall health of the Hispanic and other underserved communities. I plan to do this by providing culturally sensitive care, advocating for oral health education, and using my bilingual skills to break down barriers between providers and patients- which is something my family and I have experienced firsthand. I’m glad to represent Hispanic and Latina excellence!

Thank you for investing in me and in my future patients. Your generosity inspires me to keep striving, learning, and serving with compassion and purpose.

Best,
Lesly Juarez, Future BSDH,RDH

Anthony Neciosup Galindo - DH - Plaza College (NY)

On behalf of my family and myself, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Crest Oral B Bridges and the HDAF for this generous scholarship. I am deeply honored by your recognition of my years of resilience and dedication to the Hispanic community. This award will help alleviate the financial hardship during my final year of school, enabling me to remain focused on my clinical and didactic studies.

Working with and advocating for the Hispanic community has been one of the most memorable experiences of my dental hygiene journey. I recall demonstrating brushing methods to families at a local public hospital, and now, as a dental hygiene student, I can provide more intervention and see tangible results in my patients. Many of my patients at school in Queens, New York, have been Spanish-speaking, and I am fortunate to provide compassionate and high-quality care without language barriers. Working as a temp dental assistant during my schooling has opened my eyes to the disparities that exist related to language barriers, immigration status, and socioeconomic status. It is evident that the dental field needs more Spanish-speaking professionals, and I hope to see increased representation in the years to come. Dentistry is a rewarding profession, and I look forward to improving the oral and systemic health of my Hispanic community.

Thank you again to Crest Oral B Bridges and the HDA Foundation for your generosity and encouragement. I will carry your support with me every day as I begin my professional career.

Joanna Riveria - DH - University of Oklahoma HSC

I am honored to be a recipient of the P&G Crest Oral B Bridges Scholarship. Becoming a dental hygienist has been my dream and your contribution is helping me pursue that dream. This scholarship represents hope, encouragement, and the belief that hard work and dedication can open doors. I chose this career to help make a difference in people’s lives by improving oral health, building patient confidence, and promoting overall wellness.

Coming from a Mexican background, I've seen firsthand how language and cultural differences can create barriers in healthcare. I want to be a part of breaking those barriers, especially for Spanish-speaking patients who may feel overlooked or misunderstood. Representation matters, and I aim to contribute to the dental hygiene profession by serving as a voice for diversity and inclusion in dental care.

Being a Hispanic first-generation college student comes with a deep sense of pride and responsibility. I rely on financial aid and scholarships to continue working toward my goal of becoming a dental hygienist. Balancing work and school is not easy, but I stay focused because I know I'm building a better future for myself and my family. This scholarship has alleviated some financial stress and will remind me that my hard work and dreams are significant.

Your support fuels my determination to serve with empathy and purpose. I hope to use my education to provide compassionate, culturally aware care, especially for families who may feel unseen in the healthcare system. My goal as a dental hygienist is to be a trusted advocate, someone who not only cleans teeth, but also builds confidence, understanding, and long-term wellness within the community I serve. Thank you for believing in me and supporting my journey.

Colgate Scholarship Recipients

Cedric Fajardo - D2 - Roeman College of Dental Medicine

I am deeply honored and grateful to have been selected among so many wonderful students and scholars for the Colgate/HDAF scholarship. I would like to thank Colgate for sponsoring such a wonderful opportunity that means so much more than money. It is an affirmation that the work and time and dedication I have put into being a part of such a prestigious and important profession is worth it and is making a difference. It is a reminder that I belong and am needed in the dental field to make an impact in the health and quality of life of so many, especially in the Hispanic and other underserved communities. To my family, this scholarship is a symbol of how much we have overcome to be where we are now. My father was born in a civil war-torn Guatemala and migrated to the United States with my grandparents in an incredibly brave move to make a better life for me. Now, I am able to give back to my people and my community. There are so many of our Latino brothers and sisters who need dental care who lack the resources, language, or access to this care. It is a challenge that being in this field requires me to be a part of. And while I cannot do it all on my own, I know I can make a difference. I commit to furthering the vision of the HDAF by being an active advocate in my community to benefit the health of all underserved populations as a leader, educator, and dental provider. Again, I express my gratitude to the HDAF, Colgate, and my family for such a rewarding and humbling opportunity.

Edward Hernandez - D3 - Western University of Health Sciences

I am deeply honored to be selected as a recipient of the Colgate Dental Student Scholarship. This award is more than just financial support, it represents an investment in my journey as a Hispanic oral health professional. For my family and me, this scholarship is a source of pride and encouragement, reminding us that our sacrifices and hard work are recognized and valued.

This scholarship strengthens my ability to continue this work, both as a student and in my future career. I plan to use the knowledge and skills I am gaining to create culturally competent, community-centered oral health programs and to serve as a bridge between the dental profession and the communities who need it most.

I am truly grateful to Colgate for supporting students like me. Your generosity makes it possible for us to pursue our education while staying grounded in service and advocacy. I look forward to carrying this legacy forward and working to expand access, equity, and representation in dentistry.

Sincerely,
Edward Hernandez

David Forero - D2 - University of CA at San Francisco

I am incredibly honored to be a recipient of the Colgate Scholarship. My passion for dentistry is rooted in a desire to make a tangible difference in people’s smiles, oral health, and confidence, and to improve accessibility to the basic dental care everyone deserves.

When I was three years old, a guerrilla war forced my family from my home country in Colombia. As we struggled to find our footing in our new world, our access to healthcare was limited. I distinctly remember the sense of security and trust my mom and I felt at a community dental clinic in Miami when the provider spoke Spanish, our native language, and treated us with kindness and respect. This experience instilled in me the profound importance of accessible healthcare and the invaluable role of providers who understand and reflect their communities—a vision at the heart of the HDAF's mission.

Over the past two years, I have worked with public health organizations in San Francisco to connect uninsured patients with free dental care. I have also become a mentor to aspiring first-generation college students and other aspiring healthcare professionals from Hispanic and Latino communities, guiding them through a journey I understand deeply. The immense joy I get from this work, while simultaneously improving my clinical skills, is an incredible feeling that confirms I am on the right path.

Victoria Parente - D4 - NOVA Southeastern University

I am deeply honored to be a recipient of the HDAF/Colgate Scholarship. This award holds great meaning for me and my family, as it not only eases the financial demands of my dental education but also affirms my commitment to serving the Hispanic and other underserved communities. As a proud Hispanic student, I have witnessed firsthand the barriers many face in accessing quality oral healthcare. This scholarship inspires me to continue breaking down those barriers through education, outreach, and culturally competent care. Guided by the HDAF’s vision to promote the overall health of these communities, I will continue participating in initiatives like Give Kids a Smile, community screenings, and mentorship programs for future dental students. I aspire to use my career to advocate for equitable access to care, address health disparities, and empower individuals with the knowledge and resources to maintain lifelong oral health. I am truly grateful to Colgate and the HDAF for believing in my potential and investing in my future. Your support not only strengthens my resolve but also reminds me of the powerful impact that compassion and opportunity can have on shaping a healthier, more equitable society.

Yanzel Vanegas - D4 - University of TX at Houston

I would like to extend my gratitude to Colgate and thank them for selecting me as a recipient of this scholarship. As I begin my fourth and final year of dental school, the funds from this scholarship are going to fund the cost of my final skill assessment exams and materials needed for these exams. As a student who relies on student loans to fund the entirety of my dental school education and living expenses, I am highly appreciative of everyone who is involved in being able to provide students with scholarships and help ease the financial burden of many. This scholarship is not only an investment in my future, but in the future health of communities I care deeply about. As someone who has navigated the journey toward a career in healthcare coming from a Hispanic and low-income background, I understand the challenges and doubts that can arise in pursuing a career in dentistry. I want to be the encouragement and resource that I once needed to guide young students from similar backgrounds and aid them achieve their goals. I am committed to using my education to reduce health disparities and ensure that every individual, regardless of background, can access quality care and can achieve their goal in reaching their desired health care profession.

Victor Collins-Wright - DH - Pacific University (OR)

I want to express my deepest gratitude to Colgate and the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation (HDAF) for awarding me this scholarship. I am truly honored to be selected and to be supported by organizations that share my passion for serving others. This scholarship is not only a generous contribution toward my education but also a tremendous relief for me and my family, as it helps ease the financial burden of student loans during my final year in the dental hygiene program.

I am committed to upholding the mission of the HDAF—“to promote the overall health of the Hispanic and other underserved communities.” My goal is to provide both preventive and therapeutic care while also empowering patients through education. I believe that knowledge is just as important as treatment, and I am passionate about helping patients understand the connection between oral health and overall well-being.

Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the barriers that many individuals in underserved communities face in accessing quality dental care. This inspired me to pursue a career where I can bridge those gaps, advocate for equitable healthcare, and create meaningful change. This scholarship reinforces my commitment to serve with compassion, cultural sensitivity, and professionalism. Again I would like to thank you for this opportunity and support throughout my dental hygiene education.

Janett Flores - DH - Palo Alto College (TX)

I am grateful to be a recipient of the Colgate scholarship through the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation. This support means a lot to me; it is not only an investment in my education but also in my family’s hopes and in the future, I am working hard to build.

As a first-generation student from a Hispanic family, this scholarship has significantly helped the financial burden of continuing my education. It allows me to focus fully on my academic career without the added stress of financial strain. My family, who have sacrificed so much for my education, share in this gratitude. This scholarship represents recognition of our perseverance and commitment to achieving a better future.

This scholarship reinforces my commitment to uphold the mission of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation: to promote the overall health of Hispanic communities and serve my local community—one smile at a time. I am determined to use my education and skills to help those who face barriers to healthcare. I plan to be part of my local community outreach and advocate for greater access to dental services in underserved areas.

Thank you, Colgate and the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation, for believing in me. Your support inspires me to continue working with purpose and compassion as I strive to make a lasting impact on my community.

Damarys Nikol Jara-Rivera - DH - University of New Haven (CT)

I would like to sincerely thank Colgate for awarding me a scholarship that has been instrumental in helping me pursue my education and accomplish my goal of becoming a dental hygienist. I am deeply grateful for your support, which has not only eased my journey but also empowered me to grow into the confident and dedicated professional I am today. I take great pride in who I’ve become and the path I’ve chosen, and I carry with me a strong desire to give back. My hope is to pay this generosity forward by raising awareness about the importance of dental hygiene in my community—educating others, promoting preventative care, and inspiring healthier smiles, one person at a time. Dental hygiene is more than a profession to me; it's a mission to make a lasting impact through education, compassion, and prevention.

Sincerely,
Damarys Nikol Jara Rivera

Delta Dental Scholarship Recipients

Sofia Banegas Anez - D2 - Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine

I am eternally grateful to be a recipient of the HDAF scholarship, generously sponsored by the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation. This award means far more than just financial support; it represents the path that led me here, my family’s sacrifices, and my commitment to serving my community.
I was born and raised in Bolivia, where I saw firsthand the realities of growing up in a third-world country. I remember neighbors living with untreated dental pain for years, and how lack of accessibility, funds and oral education affected the community around me. These experiences planted in me a deep awareness of the disparities that exist and a lifelong determination to be part of the solution. When my family immigrated to the United States, my parents gave up their professional careers so I could have opportunities they never had. This scholarship honors their sacrifices, eases the financial burden of dental school, and allows me to focus on my studies, research, and outreach efforts.

I am committed to furthering the vision of the HDAF, to promote the overall health of the Hispanic and underserved communities. Throughout my time in dental school, I have been involved in outreach programs through HSDA, from providing oral health education at the Mexican consulate to participating in Special Olympics Special Smiles.

This scholarship empowers me to expand on these efforts. As a future dentist, I aim to integrate education, prevention, and compassionate care into my practice, and thereby creating accessible dental care initiatives that remove obstacles to treatment and help people reclaim their health and confidence. This award fuels that mission and my belief that quality dental care is a right, not a privilege.

Kassandra Canales - D3 - Southern IL University School of Dental Medicie

I would like to express my deepest gratitude toward the HDAF and the Delta Dental of Il Foundation for not only awarding me this scholarship but giving me the confidence to know that I can make change. Receiving this award relieves me of some of the worries of paying for school and allows me to focus not just on my studies but on doing everything I can to provide for underrepresented communities. I am reminded that I am not alone, and there are organizations that recognize students who are passionate about making a difference.

Pursuing this profession seemed like such a daunting task when I first started. I worried if my family would be okay as I would try to become the first doctor in my family because of the number of sacrifices they would have to make. As I have continued through school, I know that this profession is for me. Witnessing the gaps in access to affordable and effective oral healthcare firsthand through my own family’s experience has driven me to serve my community and be a voice for those who have had similar experiences. Finally starting an HSDA chapter here at Southern Illinois will provide students with a platform to promote oral healthcare within our community. I am so excited for our chapter this year and the ideas we have planned to provide equitable care and make a change.

Edilberto Castillo - D3 - University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation for this scholarship. To me and my family, it represents far more than financial support—it is hope, recognition, and a reminder that perseverance pays off. For ten years, I applied to dental school, enduring rejection after rejection. Each one hurt, but I never let go of my dream. Today, as a Hispanic dental student, I can finally say I made it, and your support is helping me stay here.

I was raised by a single mother who, because of her dyslexia, was unable to work. From a young age, I understood the reality of responsibility. At sixteen, I began working to help support our family. Those experiences taught me resilience, sacrifice, and the importance of lifting others as you climb.

This scholarship eases the financial burden of my education, allowing me to focus fully on becoming the kind of dentist my community deserves. I share the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation’s vision “to promote the overall health of the Hispanic and other underserved communities” because I have lived that need. I know what it feels like to be overlooked, and I am determined to be the dentist who changes that for others.

I will use my career to serve, to advocate, and to inspire—especially Hispanic students—showing them that with dedication and perseverance, even dentistry is possible. Thank you for believing in me, my potential, and the future I am working hard to build.

Lianna Chacon - D3 - University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry

I am truly honored to receive the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation Scholarship through the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation. As a first-generation dental student, and mom to a busy three-year-old, this recognition means more than words can express. It represents the daily early mornings before sunrise and late-night study sessions after bedtime, and the sacrifices my family and I have made to make my dream, our dream, a reality.

This scholarship lessens the financial burden of dental school, allowing me to focus on becoming the best clinician I can be. More importantly, it supports my commitment to the HDAF mission to promote the overall health of Hispanic and underserved communities. Having been in the dental field for over 10 years, I’ve personally spoken with patients who have gone years without the care they needed often due to language barriers, lack of insurance, or simply not having access to a provider they trust. Those conversations have stayed with me and continue to motivate me not just as a provider for the Hispanic community but as an active voice in encouraging more Hispanics to pursue careers in dentistry.

The mentorship that HDAF provides also means so much to me. I’ve always valued learning from those who are a representation of me, and I’m excited to connect with professionals who share the same heart for service. I know the guidance I receive will shape not only my future practice, but also how I show up for the communities I care about most.

Thank you, Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation, for believing in students like me. Your support is not only an investment in my education, but also in the many patients and families I will serve throughout my career.

Jennifer Contreras - D3 - University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry

Thank you, Delta Dental of IL Foundation, this scholarship is a blessing and great reminder to not only become a skilled dentist, but also a dedicated advocate for oral health equity. As I pursue my career, I am committed to continuing the HDAF mission by continuing to volunteer at community clinics, participating in dental outreach programs and educating patients on preventative oral care. Thank you again for your support and belief in my potential.

Jose Luis Tapia - AS - Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine

I am deeply honored to have been selected as a recipient of this scholarship. This support not only eases my financial burden but also inspires me to continue pursuing excellence in my academic and professional journey.

As a Hispanic student, this award carries an even greater meaning because it represents recognition, opportunity, and belief in the potential of students like me. I sincerely hope that programs like this continue to be offered so that future Hispanic students can also benefit from the same encouragement, resources, and motivation that I have received.

Thank you for investing in my future and in the futures of so many others. Your generosity will have a lasting impact.

Rodrigo Vega - D3 - University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry

I'd like to extend my deepest gratitude to Delta Dental of IL Foundation for supporting my journey to become one of the 6% of Latino dentists. As a first-generation student born to immigrant parents, finding financial support has often been a significant barrier to pursuing my career. Your support, along with that of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation (HDAF), has made it possible for me to pursue my dreams.

I am committed to furthering HDAF’s vision "to promote the overall health of the Hispanic and other underserved communities." This scholarship allows me to continue providing care in low-income communities, where I can make a real difference by improving access to dental care and changing smiles one patient at a time. I am eager to contribute to a healthier future for these communities and help close the health disparity gap.

Kayla Mashek - DH - Prairie State College (IL)

I am immensely grateful to be a recipient of the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation scholarship. As a second-year dental hygiene student at Prairie State College, this support has made a memorable difference during such a critical time in my education. With board exams approaching quickly and graduation in May, this scholarship has eased financial stress and allowed me to focus fully on my studies and clinical experience to become the best dental hygienist I can be for my patients.

Receiving this scholarship has also given me the opportunity to learn more about HDAF and its values. Specifically, “to promote the overall health of underserved communities.” This message truly resonates with me, as I believe everyone deserves access to quality oral healthcare, regardless of their background or circumstances. As I prepare to enter the dental hygiene profession, I am committed to carrying this value into the work I do every day.

Thank you to the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation for your generosity and your commitment to supporting future dental professionals.

Sincerely,
Kayla Mashek

Priscilla Reyes - DH - Prairie State College (IL)

I am beyond grateful and honored to be a recipient of the Delta Dental of IL Foundation scholarship. This scholarship allows me to focus on my studies and relieve financial stress. Although this scholarship brings me freedom from a financial burden, it is also an investment in my future and is allowing me as a first generation student to continue my education. Growing up, my family and I did not have much but my parents always emphasized how important it is to stay in school, go to college, and pursue a career we are passionate about. That is what Dental Hygiene is for me, a career that brings me joy and fulfillment in helping and educating others on how important oral health is. Dental education and knowledge are extremely important to me because many Hispanic and underserved communities lack oral health education and access to dental care. As a student and future Dental Hygienist, I will contribute to the dental health of the Hispanic and underserved communities as well as educate on the significance of oral health. Continuing my education will not only promote oral health for the Hispanic and underserved communities but also promote overall health for all. Thank you for investing towards my educational journey in becoming a Dental Hygienist. Additionally, I would like to thank the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation for paving the way for scholarship opportunities and their commitment to supporting students through scholarships. HDAF is not only helping students like me from a financial aspect but is also allowing me to make a meaningful impact on the health of others.

A-dec Scholarship Recipient

Jessica Schlaen - D3 - NOVA Southeastern University

I’m incredibly grateful to A-dec for this amazing scholarship—thank you so much for supporting my journey! This means the world to me, as I’ve dreamed of becoming a dentist since I was 10 years old, and now it’s becoming a reality. In high school, I started a community service project called Sparkly Smile, where I donated toothbrushes and toothpaste to families in need—and I’ve continued it ever since. Everyone deserves a healthy (and sparkly!) smile. Your support not only motivates me to keep spreading smiles and making oral health more accessible, but it also makes me feel truly honored to change people’s lives for the better. Helping the Hispanic community in need is especially meaningful to me, and seeing the joy, confidence, and happy faces after my work reminds me exactly why I chose this path.

Latin Leadership Network Foundation Scholarship Recipient

Lorena Riera Cedillo - D3 - NYU College of Dentistry

I am truly honored to be selected as a recipient of the Latin Leadership Foundation Dental Student Scholarship. For my family and me, this award represents more than financial support, it is a recognition of the sacrifices, perseverance, and dedication that have shaped my journey. As a first-generation Latina pursuing dentistry, I carry with me the dreams of my family, who left their home country to provide me with the opportunity to pursue my education and serve my community. This scholarship helps alleviate part of the financial burden of dental school, allowing me to dedicate more time and focus to my studies, patient care, and community involvement.

The mission of the HDAF, to promote the overall health of Hispanic and other underserved communities, is deeply personal to me. Growing up, I saw how language barriers, lack of access, and limited resources affected the oral and overall health of Hispanic families. As a dental student and future dentist, I am committed to bridging these gaps through culturally competent care, patient education, and outreach programs that make dentistry more accessible.

With the support of this scholarship, I will continue to engage with the Hispanic Student Dental Association, mentor aspiring dental students, and advocate for initiatives that improve healthcare equity. I am grateful for the opportunity to join the network of leaders inspired by the HDAF’s vision, and I look forward to contributing to a healthier, more empowered community.

With sincere appreciation,
